Properly cleaning a rug means you can extend its life. Since a sheepskin rug is a luxurious item, it needs to be cared for carefully, and with all the love, you can shower. A rug made of genuine sheepskin means that you need to account for the naturalness of the rug.

Cleaning a natural sheep skin rug is like working on leather and wool simultaneously. Those who do this work regularly will probably concur that these two materials are the most difficult to clean. So, it might seem challenging to clean sheepskin rugs, but there are ways to handle it professionally.

Vacuum

Well, this might be the most popular way of cleaning rugs, but there is a way to vacuum clean a rug. Start by giving the rug a thorough shake, and this is best done outside. Shaking will loosen out the soil and dirt particles from the rug making it easier to vacuum out the dirt stuck to the wool and the skin.

Use the Bathtub

Read this before judging us not to talk about throwing the rug in a washing machine immediately. Well, never use a washing machine to clean a sheepskin rug. Because there are high chances that the rug will disintegrate in the washing machine.

Instead, fill your bathtub with lukewarm water. As for the choice of detergent, make sure to buy one without enzymes. The enzymes can ruin the wool, so it's best to avoid these.

With the water filled, throw the rug in the bathtub and add the wool wash. Let it soak for about 15 to 20 minutes. Take the rug out, rinse it of water, and let it dry.

Steam Clean

If you have one of those fancy steam cleaners in your house, you can also use them to wipe off all the dirt from your sheep skin rug. Using a steam cleaner is easy. You just need to rub the rug with the nozzle for up to 10 minutes.

While doing so, make sure that you move in the direction of the wool growth. This will help de-knot the wool and make it look as good as new.
Go Old School
Going old school means using a brush and an appropriate wool wash solution for the rug. You have to make sure the brush does not have harsh bristles and spokes as it can ruin the rug.

Pour some water on the rug and start rubbing. As you rub, you will see the dirt getting mixed with the foam coming out due to the detergent. While running, wear rubber gloves to protect your skin from getting infected.

Once you feel that it’s a good scrub, wash the rug with water and let it dry.

Removing Rug Stains

We all dread the moment when a guest spills red wine, or a kid topples down the small bowl of ketchup on the luxurious and natural sheep skin rug. The good news is that it can be cleaned. However, you must follow the right process.

Wine, ketchup, vomit, etc., are acidic stains and are pretty hard to remove. However, to get rid of them, start by containing the stain. Do not throw water immediately; it will only spread further.

Again, use a wool wash that does not have enzymes for the cleaning. Scrub the stain thoroughly and wash it off with lukewarm water.

Conclusion

Cleaning a genuine sheepskin rug is an easy task if you know how to execute everything perfectly well. From using a vacuum to lukewarm water and enzyme-free wool wash, it is essential to be sensitive in every aspect if you want to sustain the rug’s quality and health.
